Samenvatting: Uit een kleine provinciestad waartoe Athene door de eeuwen heen verworden was ten tijde van de Griekse onafhankelijkheidsverwerving in de jaren 1820, groeide een miljoenenhoofdstad, die in haar sociaal weefsel een bijna feilloze weerspiegeling is van de bewogen moderne geschiedenis van het land en van de huidige dubbele crisis van economie en migratie, vandaag weliswaar minder in het nieuws, maar daarom niet minder reëel en ingrijpend. Vanuit die invalshoek van geschiedenis en hedendaagse omstandigheden geven we een kijk op Athene, eens niet vooral gericht op de Akropolis en de antiquiteit.
Bio spreker:
Born on 11 August 1955 in Belgium, Marc Van den Reeck graduated in 1977 from the Rijksuniversiteit Gent (RUG) in macroeconomics and entered the Belgian Diplomatic Service in 1980. Earlier diplomatic functions included Strasbourg (Council of Europe), Lusaka (Zambia), Maputo (Mozambique), Washington DC (US) and Athens (Greece). As head of mission he served as Consul-General in Istanbul, Turkey (1997-2002), ambassador to the UAE (2002-2005) and ambassador to Greece (2011-2015). In his home country he was a.o. head of the Nato/European Defence Department at the MFA (1995-1997), diplomatic advisor to the Minister of Justice (2007-2009) and Deputy Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2009-2011). During a sabbatical (2005 – 2007) he was Advisor and Coordinator for European Affairs and Member of the Assets and Liabilities Committee of the Central Bank of the UAE. He is now retired and currently heading, on a volunteer basis, international cooperation at the Greek NGO “The Smile of the Child”, active in child care and child protection.

Bio speaker: Prof. dr. I. Kazazis, studied Classical Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and at the University of Illinois and Yale. He is fellow at Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the University of North Dakota (Lexicography fellow). Since 1979, he is professor of Classical Philology, AUTh, and in parallel: president, School of Modern Greek (AUTh); research coordinator, Center for the Historical Lexicon of Modern Greek (Academy of Athens); director for Minor Languages, Atlas Linguarum Europae. Since 1994, Deputy Director and Director of the Centre for the Greek Language and Director of the Centre’s Divisions on Lexicography and Certification of Proficiency in Modern Greek. Since 2010, Director of the Greek National Council for Primary and Secondary Education. Extensive research in Classical Philology (for example on Lyric Poetry, Historiography, History of Greek Studies in Europe from the Renaissance to the present), Medieval and Modern Greek Lexicography (for example six volumes of the Kriaras Medieval Greek Dictionary).

Title: Heraklion in de “Renaissance”: Candida alias civitas Venetiarum apud Levantem?

Samenvatting:
Candia (in het Latijn, Candida), het tegenwoordige Heraklion, was de hoofdstad van Kreta onder Venetiaans bestuur (1211-1669). De stad was een belangrijk handelscentrum in de Oostelijke Middellandse Zee, een stad waarin een duidelijk multiculturele samenleving tot bloei kwam. De relatie van Candia met Venetië was niet eenvoudig: tussen de twee steden vonden allerlei verschillende processen van culturele uitwisseling plaats. Met name in de laatste fase van de Venetiaanse aanwezigheid op het eiland (1571-1669) was er zelfs sprake van de ontwikkeling van een “Veneto-Kretenzische” cultuur. Aan de hand van materiële objecten, monumenten en notariële akten wil ik een antwoord proberen te geven op de vraag: In hoeverre was Candia een Venetiaanse stad in de Levant gedurende de Kretenzische “Renaissance” (1571-1669)?
Bio:
Tatiana Markaki is geboren in Heraklion, Kreta, en studeerde geschiedenis en archeologie (met nadruk op de Griekse wereld in de periode van het Venetiaans bestuur) aan de Universiteit van Athene, piano aan het Nationaal Conservatorium van Athene, en Helleense Studies bij de opleiding Nieuwgriekse taal en cultuur van de UvA. In het Rijksarchief van Venetië verrichtte zij onderzoek naar aspecten van de sociaal-economische geschiedenis en de cultuurgeschiedenis van Kreta in de 16e-17e eeuw dat resulteerde in een aantal publicaties en de dissertatie Objects and identities: Dowry and Material Culture in Venetian Crete in Regional and European Context (1600-1645). Sinds 1995 werkt zij in deeltijd als docent Nieuwgriekse taal en geschiedenis bij de opleiding Nieuwgriekse taal en cultuur van de UvA. Sinds 2013 is zij programmateamleider van dezelfde opleiding.
